Gravity Calamity

Programmer | 6 Developers | Oct 2020 - Dec 2020

Gravity Calamity was a mobile game created by six developers from SMU Guildhall’s Cohort 30 students for our Team Game Production (TGP1) class. Team1Up’s original idea for Gravity Calamity focused on elements from both puzzle games and platformers. Our goal was to create a game that involved puzzle solving and light exploration in a post-apocalyptic world without being too dark.

Gravity Calamity was the first game I made at SMU Guildhall in our TGP1 class. On this project, I was primarily responsible for the production needs of the project, as well as UI programming, sound design and implementation, and some gameplay programming.

Some of the lessons I learned on the project included:

  • How to Learn: Since this project was done in Unity, an engine I had little experience in, I had to learn how to get comfortable with experimenting with different solutions to various problems. Since we only had 3 hours to work per day, it was often better to jump in and try something than to get stuck trying to plan the perfect design from the start.

  • Playtest Early: If I had to pick one thing that helped the development process of Gravity Calamity, it was our fixed playtesting schedule. Sticking to a strict playtesting schedule helped us find and solve bugs or playability issues before the end of our sprint.
